"The painting depicts Ivan IV, one of Russia's most bloodthirsty and suspicious tsars in the 16th century, nicknamed Ivan the Terrible, clutching his son whom he had killed with an iron rod after a quarrel over a simple family matter.

With immense terror and profound remorse, the father rushes to his son, pressing him to his chest and squeezing the wound tightly, hoping that his only son will rise and this nightmare will vanish.

His eyes say it all – the terror mixed with tears and regret, which the artist Ilya has embodied magnificently. This painting makes one wonder how an artist can portray the features of remorse and panic with such idealism.
